Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

January 18 - January 25

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is always on 18th – 25th January each year, to be sure it covers at least one Sunday.  It is also called the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity as it covers 8 days.

Why not visit a different church, or do a candle swap with a nearby church?

Come to the Service of Prayer for Christian Unity

Here are some prayers for each day

Monday 18th January: Dr Lynn Bassett, Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster
Father in heaven, this week we hold all the churches of Hertfordshire in prayer. Where separated, help us to draw closer in Christ and to build stronger bonds of unity through the power of your Holy Spirit. Held in the love of the Most Holy Trinity, may we all be one.

Tuesday 19th January: Archbishop Angaelos, Coptic Orthodox Church

“As we gather for this Week Of Prayer For Christian Unity we lift up our hearts for all those alone and separated, and those struggling with loneliness and isolation; that the meaning and imagery of the Body Of Christ be fully realised in their hearts and minds and that they feel at one with us all” Archbishop Angaelos @BishopAngaelos

Wednesday 20th January: Rev. Stephen Copson, Central Baptist Association
Lord, increase in us your compassion, joy, peace, patience and all the other fruits of your Spirit, that as we sound the note of our different traditions, so may we be a beautiful harmony, that the world may hear clearly your good news in Jesus Christ.

Thursday 21st January
Rev. Dr David Chapman, Chair of the Methodist District
Holy God, Jesus prayed that his followers would be one. Bring us, we pray, to deeper unity with you and with one another in the Body of Christ, the Church, that we may share more effectively in our Lord’s ministry of reconciliation in a broken and divided world.

Friday 22nd January Doral Hayes, Churches Together in Hertfordshire
God of Unity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The world declares your wonderful variety. May we be a witness to your love and unity in work, witness and worship together. In the name of Jesus. Amen

Saturday 23rd January
Bishop Michael Beasley, Bishop of Hertford
Living God, you have made us with different perspectives and understandings, skills and gifts, passions and priorities. As we draw together in this week of prayer, help us to delight in the diversity you have created among us, your people united in you. Amen.

Sunday 24th January Bishop Paul McAleenan

‘Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord? The one with clean hands and pure heart who desires not worthless things’. Lord Jesus, the psalmist keeps us attentive to you in prayer for Christian Unity. With your grace, supporting each other, we ascend your holy mountain.

Monday 25th January Rev. Alison Facey, St Johns Methodist Church Potters Bar.
Go-between God, bridge-builder, community maker Help us to: cross the denominational boundaries we have erected, pray with and for one another,
find ways we can serve the needs of our community together, care for the suffering together, work for justice and peace together.. Do your will and receive your gift of unity so that your Kingdom may come in our lives and the life of the world. Amen
